Antti Piispanen

Antti Piispanen


Antti is a member of the SOSRES Advisor Board. With more than 15 years of experience in international affairs, working with UN System Organizations including the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific as well as the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, Antti brings a wealth of knowledge to SOSRES. He has previously worked with the Bank of Finland and currently serves as a Counselor for the Finnish Embassy in Namibia where he coordinates Finland’s participation in cooperation development.

Antti also holds degrees from Aalto-yliopiston kauppakorkeakoulu (Aalto University School of Business), Finland’s top business school, and a Fellowship with the Kiel Institute for the World Economy.

Gernot Brodnig





Gernot is currently a Senior Social Development Specialist with the World Bank and Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF) where is he the focal point for IndigenousPeoples and local communities and manager of the capacity

building programs. Prior to joining the World Bank, Gernot was the Regional Technical Advisor on Natural Resources for the United Nations Development Programme’s Regional Centre Bangkok where he worked with UNDP’s country offices throughout the Asia-Pacific region.

His background also includes serving as a  Research Fellow at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government, where he directed the Harvard Oil Dialogues, a series of consultations between oil companies and environmental NGOs, hosted by the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs.

Gernot Brodnig has been trained in law (Ph.D., University of Vienna), international affairs (M.A.,SAIS/Johns Hopkins University) and geography (M.Phil., Cambridge).

Kris Atchley


With over 30 years experience in international affairs, including an appointment as United States Ambassador (Permanent Representative) to UNEP, Kris provides invaluable expertise to SOSRES. His experience includes UNFCCC negotiations, biodiversity, and energy intelligence.

In addition to his career with the State Department, Kris has worked as an adviser with numerous firms specializing in intelligence, geopolitics, and energy.

Giorgio Spinelli



Dr. Spinelli became Professor of Economic Geography at the Faculty of Economics and Business of the University 'of Rome "La Sapienza" in 1991.  He later became a Coordinator for La Sapiena’s EuroSapienza, a top research center for European and international studies with over 50 professors and researchers.


While he also began his more than 35 years academic career at La Sapienza, he had appointments as Dean of the Faculty of Economics at the University of Cassino and later Deputy Vice-Chancellor.


Until his passing in early 2012, Dr. Spinelli was a great advocate of human development and trusted adviser to SOSRES consultants. He will be remembered for his endless advocacy for global equality.


Giuseppe Burgio


Dr. Burgio was Founder and Director of the Research Centre in European and International Studies "EuroSapienza" of the Sapienza University of Rome. The Research Centre was founded to continue the activities of the former School of Specialisation in Economics and Law of the European Communities, of which Prof. Burgio was Director from 1993 to 2001.

Dr. Burgio’s extensive career also included serving as President of CESD-Roma, an Association sponsored by the Italian National Statistical Office ISTAT to support the statistical development of transition countries. He was also appointed co-director of the EIC in Nicosia (Cyprus) by the European Commission for the three-year period preceding the accession of Cyprus to the EU.

While he began his career in Palermo where he earned his Laurea, he also received an honorary PhD from Budapest University.

Dr. Burgio’s 40 plus year commitment to development through academia and cooperation development institutions contributed a great deal. Along with Dr. Spinelli, Dr. Burgio was an early adviser to SOSRES, and his counsel was key for its development.
